Each day I try to do a learning activity with my kids, and during the summer time I try to do an interest-based activity. So a couple weeks ago, my 3 and 5 year old were both wanting to learn about spaceships, and thus this lesson plan was born.
1. Intro
- Pretend to blast off with a countdown. When you get to blastoff, have your child jump as high as they can in the air!
- Discussion:
- โWhat do rocketships do?โ
- โWho flies in a rocket?โ
2. Rocket Shape Craft
Materials: Spaceship printable (below), scissors, glue, construction paper
For younger learners, I would have the shapes precut for them to glue. If your child is proficient in cutting, it would be great practice for them to cut out their own shapes.

You can have your child sort and name the shapes. Another fun flair for this craft is some streamer paper if you have it on hand! It can be fun to add the streamers to the bottom of the rocket instead of the flame. Your child can decorate the rocket with the stars or just put on the circle windows. I had my children glue the spaceship to a sheet of black construction paper. One chose to decorate the spaceship with the stars and the other put them on the black paper. Both turned out great!

3. Count Down Game
Game Ideas:
- Place papers with numbers 10 to 1 on the floor. You can place a bean bag, some pillows, or blankets at the end for the kids to crash onto for blastoff. Or just have them jump high in the air at the end! We used stepping stones that we have at our home. We love these ones! We use them for so many things. Makeshift stools, bowls for sorting colors, stepping stones for floor is lava. They are sturdy and can be taken indoor or outdoor!

Skills:
- Counting backward
- Number recognition
- Gross motor practice
4. Space Read-Aloud
Book Ideas:
- Roaring Rockets by Tony Mitton
- There’s No Place Like Space by Tish Rabe
- Zoom, Rocket, Zoom! by Margaret Mayo
5. Pretend Play: Astronaut Mission
Set Up Ideas:
- Blanket fort = spaceship
- Backpack = oxygen tank
- Mixing bowls = control panel
Pretend Tasks:
- Draw a mission map
- โCommunicateโ with mission control
- Push buttons
- Pretend float in space
- Name space things (moon, rocket, helmet)
6. Review and Extension
- โWhat number do we blast off from?โ
- โWhat would you see in space?โ
- You can also discuss different careers that pertain to space such as:
- ๐ฉโ๐ Astronaut
They ride in spaceships, do spacewalks, and explore the Moon or space stations!
๐ ๏ธ Rocket Builder
They help build real spaceships, piece by pieceโlike building a giant LEGO set!
๐งช Space Scientist
They study planets, stars, and what it’s like in outer space.
๐ป Computer Coder
They write special instructions (code) so the spaceship knows what to do!
๐ฐ๏ธ Satellite Helper
They make sure space cameras (satellites) send pictures and info back to Earth.
๐ฎ Mission Controller
They stay on Earth and talk to the spaceship, like playing a game with a walkie-talkie!
๐ง Fix-It Crew
They fix engines, wires, and buttons before the spaceship takes off.
๐จ Space Artist
They draw space scenes, rocket designs, and fun space stories.
โ๏ธ Lawyer
They help make sure space is fair and safe for everyone. - Another extension activity would be discussing space history like the moon landing, the space station, the astronauts who got stuck in space, and other events!
Happy Space Adventures!
