Free Alphabet Sound Activity for Pre-K & Kindergarten

My kids really enjoyed the first 26 alphabet coloring pages that we did together, but they weren’t as deep educationally for my 5 year old as I would have liked. So I tinkered with them and created this game. On each page, there are pictures of common objects that your child will recognize. As they sound out the word, have them pay attention to the sound at the beginning. If they are having trouble, you can slow it down and help them really enunciate the first letter sound. The goal is to have your child color ONLY the pictures that begin with the letter on the page. See the example page below.

In this example, your child should only color the apple, ant, arrow, ax, avocado, airplane, and ambulance. The other pictures can be left blank, have them draw an x through them, or color them a different color. You could also have them practice shapes and say, “Put a circle around all the pictures that start with A and a square on any that don’t.” You could even laminate these, put them in a binder, and take them on car trips with a dry erase marker. Or if you don’t have a laminator, just use plastic sleeves and slide them in. By the end of your summer road trip, your child could have their alphabet sounds committed to memory!

This is a great activity for children who are working to learn the alphabet sounds. Using pictures of things they recognize is also great for word recall and vocabulary. If you are a parent who uses busy books at church, in the car, or at appointments, these make a great, educational addition to your resources.
